AcEDemy's Academic Editing Services
All that time researching and writing your essay/dissertation/thesis/paper/article/book and now you’re ready to submit it. Wait, are you sure there’s no embarrassing typo, no forgotten apostrophe, no dodgy verb agreement, no missing reference in your bibliography? That’s where academic editing can help.
AcEDemy’s straightforward academic editing service is designed to help those in academia – students, teachers, researchers and so on – polish their text prior to submission. You write the text to the best of your ability – a copy-edit then ensures it reads well and that your meaning is carrying forth and/or a proofread gives you peace of mind that your text is consistent and error-free.
I’ve worked on hundreds of documents over the years, ensuring the final text is of a professional, publishable standard. There’s no room in academia for careless writing: attention to detail, pride in your work, quality, accuracy – these are the foundations for good academic writing.
On this page you will find out about AcEDemy’s academic editing services: copy-editing and proofreading.
PLEASE NOTE: AcEDemy only offers straightforward copy-editing and proofreading services for students and academics. I do not write academic texts or stray into development editing, which involves restructuring, rewriting and critiquing or assessing content. This ensures that AcEDemy meets the high ethical and anti-plagiarism standards of all academic institutions, and that no accusation of plagiarism or collusion can be levelled at you for working with me.
Academic Copy-editing Service
Why hire a copy editor?
You want to be taken seriously as an academic writer. You want the reader to give weight to your words and be impressed by your ideas and communicative ability. What you don’t want is to be let down by your writing style.
Students writing their dissertation may lose marks for poor writing. A paper presented to a journal may be rejected due to a lack of readability. It’s not just what you say in your academic writing that matters, it’s how you say it.
Many people writing a thesis, dissertation, paper or book seek the support of a professional copy editor. Academic copyediting can take the headache out of preparing writing for submission/publication and it creates a professional, finished piece.
Note: If you’re confident in your writing ability you may choose to skip the copy-editing stage in the editorial process and go straight to proofreading. Be aware, in this case, that although proofreading ensures the final text is accurate and consistent in terms of language, it doesn’t guarantee good writing style.
What exactly is copy-editing?
Copy-editing is a step up from proofreading. Copy-editing basically means editing language only. It incorporates proofreading – ensuring accuracy and consistency in the language – but also looks to ensure clarity and decent readability. For example, my academic copy-editing service looks at areas such as capitalisation, breaking down long sentences and paragraphs, vocabulary, repetition, vague or contradictory text, use of punctuation and logical flow.
As a general rule, publishing good practice is that texts are copy-edited by one editor and then proofread by at least one other. Please bear this in mind if you want to meet these industry standards.
As standard in my proofreading service below, I check all references in your bibliography against in-text/footnote/endnote citations. If you don’t need me to do this, let me know and I will factor the removal of this check into my costing.
I offer a free 500-word copy-edit from an extract of your text, to give you an idea of how my copy-editing service can help you. If you would like a sample edit, please get in touch.
Academic Proofreading Service
Why hire a proofreader?
Even the best writers need a proofreader. You’d be amazed how many corrections I make when proofreading.
There are two kinds of mistake the academic proofreading service finds and corrects:
- The mistake you didn’t even realise was a mistake. Years of editing, day in, day out, mean professional proofreaders know a lot about the English language. We correct a whole host of things that many people writing academic papers/essays/theses/dissertations don’t realise are incorrect.
- The mistake you simply missed. No matter how many times you read something, when you’ve written it yourself you’re usually too close to the material to spot every error. Your brain fills in the odd missing word and skips over that typo you always make. The eagle eyes of the professional proofreader, however, home in on such innocent mistakes.
There’s really no substitute for professional proofreading if you want peace of mind that your text is error-free and consistent.
What is proofreading?
Proofreading focuses on two key areas:
- Accuracy: The proofreading service involves correcting errors in spelling, punctuation and grammar.
- Consistency: The proofreading service ensures a consistent style is applied to text in areas such as capitalisation, italicisation, hyphenation, punctuation and spelling styles.
Please note: Proofreading does not involve improving the writing style in any way; it simply corrects mistakes and inconsistencies. Improving the text comes under the copy-editing service.
As standard in my proofreading service, I check all references in your bibliography against in-text/footnote/endnote citations. If you don’t need me to do this, let me know and I will factor the removal of this check into my costing.
I offer a free 500-word proofread from an extract of your text, to give you an idea of how my proofreading service can help you. If you would like a sample edit, please get in touch.
